About Araucanas

Araucanas lay a teal (blue/green) egg. They are good layers with a small pea comb, crest, muffs and beard (names for the various head feathers).

They have an orange eye and wattles are minimal, preferably absent. Most breeders aim for slate colour legs, although the Australian breed standard allows for willow to olive coloured legs (cuckoo is an exception, which have white legs with blue spots).

Araucanas come in many colours, with any colour from the Old English Game breed standard allowed (which is a lot). These may include Black Red, Duckwing, Brown Red, Pile, Creel, Birchen etc. Commonly Araucanas are seen in lavender colour.

Araucanas come in both standard and bantam size. Ashton's Araucanas breed standard size. Weights of the male should be 2.7-3.2kg and females 2.25kg-2.7kg.

About Ashton's Araucanas

Ashton's Araucanas aim is to breed a few batches of Araucana chickens each year, that meet the Australian Poultry Standards. Chicks and older chickens will be offered for sale to pet and breeder homes. We have been breeding Araucanas for several years and aim to improve our stock each year, while enjoying the eggs. We have occasionally shown our chickens at local shows and our eggs have placed 3rd at Adelaide Royal Show.

Ashton is a boy who has had a love of chickens since he was little. He would often be found in the chook pen interacting with his chickens and checking for eggs. When we decided to hatch some chicks, we chose Araucanas due to their pretty coloured eggs. After borrowing an incubator and enjoying the hatching process, a 2nd hand Rcom King Suro was purchased and a rooster was obtained to breed to our existing few Araucana hens. This built up to learning more about the Araucana breed standards as well as chicken colour genetics and subsequently selecting for particular qualities in order to adhere to the standards.

Ashton does the work collecting eggs, feeding, watering and cleaning pens in order to look after his chickens. His younger twin brothers also help. He is assisted by his mum to take orders and pack and post eggs. With the money Ashton has earnt from egg and chicken sales, he has been able to afford new larger Greatlander and Borroto incubators, extra pens, feed and water containers and the occasional posted eggs and chickens to obtain different bloodlines. Plus a few bonus goodies such as computer games (including chicken ones)!

We offer fertile eggs, chicks and occasionally pullets for sale. We mostly breed black, cuckoo and lavender colours.

Our pricing of pullets is based upon how closely the bird resembles the Australian Araucana Breed standard.

Ashton's Araucanas also owns a few Marans hens. Marans are a striking looking typical farm style chicken with a single comb, that are known for laying a lovely dark brown egg. We have Blue copper and Black copper colours and occasionally sell "olive egger or easter egger" chicks and fertilised (by Araucana rooster) brown eggs.

As we mostly concentrate on the Araucanas, we only hatch a few crosses and no longer breed pure Marans due to limited pen space and workload.
